Research demonstrates that exercise can bring about many physiological and psychological changes which improve mental health. Physiological effects of exercise include a release of endorphins, reduction of inflammatory mediators resulting in an improvement in mood state, mental functioning, and lower stress and anxiety levels. The psychological effects include a distraction from feelings of depression and anxiety, and positive feelings associated with improved self-esteem.
