Below is updated information (as of July 8, 2024) from the CVMA and CFIA regarding changes to CDC import requirements for dogs.

Dogs travelling ON OR AFTER August 1, 2024

The United States (U.S.) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced upcoming changes to the import requirements for dogs entering the U.S. These changes will come into effect on August 1, 2024 and will impact all dogs entering the U.S. from all countries.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is in constant communication with the CDC to discuss and clarify these new requirements. Please note that the CFIA is currently unable to provide endorsement for export documents for dogs entering the U.S., as the process is being discussed with the CDC.

Veterinary teams must begin to prepare for these new regulations immediately. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) recommends frequently checking the CFIA's web page on Dog's Travelling to the U.S. for the most current information as this page is updated as additional information becomes available. The process and documents needed for dogs entering the U.S. from Canada have not been finalized. The information found on the CFIA website is designed to help individuals start preparing in advance, but this is not the complete requirements.
