Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Update December 2024

Reports of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus spreading in dairy cattle, and infecting cats, humans, horses, and backyard poultry, continue to appear in the media. We remind veterinary professionals to remain vigilant when dealing with living or dead animals suspected of being infected with this virus.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is currently responding to cases of avian influenza in domestic birds across Canada. Please visit the CFIA website for the latest information regarding HPAI.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers information including guidance for veterinarians and others who may be in contact with infected or potentially infected birds, dairy cows, or other animals, and who may be at risk for exposure to avian influenza.
Basic Precautionary Measures:
- Do not touch sick or dead animals or their droppings and do not bring sick wild animals into your home or veterinary clinic.
- Keep pets away from sick or dead animals and their feces.
- Report dead or sick birds or animals to the appropriate provincial or territorial authority as soon as possible.
- Consult your healthcare provider about ways to reduce the risk of exposure and contracting the virus.
