CVMA Participates in Annual Assembly of World Organisation for Animal Health Delegates
May 29, 2015
CVMA’s President, Dr. Jean Gauvin, joined national delegates from 180 Member Countries of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and around 40 international, intergovernmental, regional and national organizations at the 83rd General Session of the World Assembly of OIE.
The World Assembly of OIE Delegates establishes the policies of the OIE and supervises their implementation. This year, its main work was to adopt new international standards relevant to animal diseases prevention and control, animal welfare and international exchanges of animals and products of animal origin.
The 83rd General Session was a very special occasion. All OIE’s governance positions were proposed for renewal by means of election by national Delegates.
As of January 1, 2016, after 15 years as Director General of the OIE, Dr. Bernard Vallat will pass the baton to Dr. Monique Eloit, for the coming five-year term. She will be the first woman leading the OIE.
Dr. Martine Dubuc, Vice-President, Science Branch, Chief Food Safety Officer of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and OIE Delegate for Canada was re-elected on the council of Americas.
“CVMA is very proud of being part of the Canadian delegation at the OIE. Thanks to CFIA, the Canadian veterinarians are well represented at the highest international level of animal health and welfare,” says Dr. Gauvin. “Very important decisions concerning terrestrial and aquatic codes, antimicrobial resistance and animal welfare to name a few, were taken during the 83rd General Session.
"On behalf of CVMA and myself, I had the chance to personally thank Dr. Vallat for his immense contribution to OIE during the past 15 years. He mentioned to me that OIE supported Canada and that Canada’s contribution was very important for OIE.”
