Calgary to Host National, Multi-Species Veterinary Convention

Calgary, Alta. – The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s (CVMA) annual convention takes place in Calgary from June 26 to 30, 2024 and offers Canadian veterinary professionals continuing education sessions focusing on companion and large animal health, animal welfare, antimicrobial stewardship, wildlife emergencies, vaccination, brachycephalic obstruction, life support, diversity, equity and inclusion, workplace culture, and more, delivered by over 50 esteemed national and international speakers.

CVMA Signature Events includes:

  • CVMA Awards Gala (6 p.m., Wednesday, June 26): Celebrates outstanding individuals and groups for their exceptional contributions to veterinary medicine.
  • CVMA Summit (8 a.m. – 12 p.m., Thursday, June 27): Animal Sentience: What Does It Mean, Why Is It Difficult to Define and What Effect May It Have on the Veterinary Profession? will focus on the evolving recognition of sentience in animals with discussion on what is meant by the term “animal sentience” and why it is difficult to create a universal definition. The legal landscape across Canada and other parts of the world will be explored to determine where the concept of animal sentience has been recognized in legislation and its effects.
  • New CVMA President announcement (approx. 12:50 p.m., Thursday, June 27)
  • CVMA National Issues Forum (2:30 – 5 p.m., Thursday, June 27): Artificial Intelligence and Veterinary Medicine: Friend or Foe? Do We Really Know? will consider the opportunities and pitfalls presented by artificial intelligence technology that operates out-of-sight and out-of-mind within a new generation of veterinary diagnostic and decision-support tools.

Of note is the CVMA’s inaugural Keynote Speaker, Anthony McLean, who will address delegates about Mental Health Awareness on Friday, June 28 at 8:30 a.m. Also new this year is the Fireside Chat that will feature Dr. Latonia Craig, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, American Veterinary Medical Association, who will present Building a Culture of Belonging in the Workplace.
