July 25, 2024

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) proudly congratulates Dr. Brian Evans, its esteemed Treasurer, on his recent appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada. This prestigious honour not only acknowledges Dr. Evans' exceptional personal contributions to the nation but also underscores the vital role of the veterinary profession in Canadian society.

Dr. Evans has served as Canada's first Chief Food Safety Officer and is recognized as the country's second-longest-serving Chief Veterinary Officer. His leadership was instrumental during the 2003 bovine spongiform encephalopathy outbreak, a crisis that required swift and decisive action to protect both public health and the agricultural sector. In this challenging time, Dr. Evans’ expertise and guidance were pivotal in navigating Canada through the outbreak, ensuring food safety, and restoring international confidence in Canadian beef products.

“Beyond crisis management, Dr. Evans has been a visionary in advancing the veterinary field. He played a foundational role in the creation of the Canada’s Council of Chief Veterinary Officers, enhancing coordination and cooperation among veterinary leaders across the country, says Dr. Tim Arthur, CVMA President. “His dedication to the One Health approach, which emphasizes the connection of human, animal, and environmental health, has driven significant progress in this multidisciplinary field.”

Dr. Evans' contributions extend globally through his involvement in establishing organizations such as the Canadian Veterinary Reserve, which provides support during national emergencies, and Veterinarians Without Borders, which promotes animal health and welfare worldwide. His work with the Canadian Embryo Transfer Certification program has further highlighted his commitment to advancing veterinary science and ensuring the highest standards in animal breeding practices.

The Order of Canada is one of the nation's highest civilian honors, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and have brought pride to the country through their actions. Dr. Brian Evans' appointment is a testament to his life-long dedication to public service, his pioneering work in veterinary science, and his unwavering commitment to improving both national and global health standards.

The CMVA extends our heartfelt congratulations to our long-time member Dr. Brian Evans of Nepean, Ontario, on this well-deserved recognition. His achievements serve as an inspiration to us all, reinforcing the importance of leadership, innovation, and service in the pursuit of a healthier world.
