Canadian Association of Professional Dog Trainers Code of Ethics Update
December 10, 2024
In 2021, the Canadian Association of Professional Dog Trainers (CAPDT) introduced an addition to its professional Code of Ethics, known as the “STOP” list – a list of severe and outdated training equipment and procedures.
The addition to the Code aligns with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s (CVMA) position statement on the Humane Training of Dogs, which emphasizes the need for training methods that respect animal welfare, reduce fear, and foster trust.
CAPDT has also established a Professional Standards and National Curriculum (PSNC) Committee, which has been actively engaged in developing a rigorous national curriculum for professional dog trainers. This initiative provides a consistent standard for humane training in Canada.
Please read this letter for more information about these initiatives the CAPDT’s request for associations to share this information with your members.
