Summary of requirements
Manuscripts must be double spaced, paginated, and written in 12-point font with 1” margins. Submit 3 copies of the manuscript, tables, and figures, as well as a copy on a diskette or compact disc (CD) (see “Electronic guidelines”), in a heavy-paper envelope. Include a covering letter and letters of permission to reproduce previously published material. The covering letter must contain a statement that the manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors and should give any additional informa-tion that may be helpful to the editor, such as the type of article the manuscript represents and whether the authors are willing to meet the cost of reproducing color illustrations. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit names and mailing addresses of suitable reviewers for their manuscript.
If the manuscript is accepted, the authors must submit 2 printouts of the final version and a revised electronic copy, as well as copyright release forms signed by each author.
Keep copies of everything submitted, and be aware of publication charges: authors will be billed $80 per published page, $10 per table, $15 per black-and-white illustration, and $150 per color illustration. Color illustrations are published only if the authors agree to pay the higher cost.
Review articles
Proposals for reviews in areas of wider interest should be submitted to the editor. Reviews should be no longer than 30 pages of text (including an abstract of 250 words maximum and 60 references maximum) plus 8 figures and tables combined
Short communications
Short communications should be no longer than 2500 words (including an abstract of 150 words maximum and 20 references maximum) plus 3 figures and tables combined. They should contain all of the sections itemized below, without the headings
Full articles
Full articles should be no longer than 4000 words (including an abstract of 250 words maximum and 40 references maximum) plus 8 figures and tables combined.
Title page
The title page should contain the following information: the title of the article (informative but concise); the name and address
(e.g., department and institution) of each author; disclaimers, if any; and the name, full postal address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the corresponding author.
Abstract
In 1 paragraph, state the purpose of the study and summarize the main methods, findings, and conclusions.
Introduction
Clearly state the purpose of the article. Summarize the rationale for the study or observation. Cite only strictly pertinent references, and do not review the subject extensively.
Materials and methods
Describe the methods and materials used in enough detail that the research could be repeated. Identify chemicals, equipment, and pharmaceuticals, placing the manufacturer’s name and address in parenthesis; with pharmaceuticals, place the trade name in parenthesis and use the generic name thereafter. Experiments on animals must follow the Guide to the Care and Use of Experimental Animals (Canadian Council on Animal Care, 315–350 Albert Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1R 1B1) and must be approved by the animal care committee of the authors’ institutions or follow the institutional
guidelines.
Results
Present findings in a logical sequence in the text, tables, and figures. Do not repeat tabulated data in the text.
Discussion
Do not repeat the results. Discuss the findings, their limitations, and your conclusions in relation to the literature.
Acknowledgments
Acknowledge only persons who have made substantial contributions to the study but do not qualify for authorship, as well as sources of support (e.g., grants, equipment, or drugs). Do not include recognition of editorial or secretarial assistance.
References
Number references in the order of first mention in the text, using arabic numerals in parenthesis. Abbreviate journal titles according to the style of Index Medicus. Avoid using abstracts. Do not use unpublished data or personal communications as references; if they are essential, insert them in parenthesis in the text, including the source’s full name and institution, as well as year of
acquisition.

Tables
Do not submit tables as photographs. Type each table on a separate page. Use the word processor’s “Tables” function; do not use “tabs”. Designate footnotes by superscript letters(abc). Consult CJVR for examples.
Figures
Figures may be produced by computer technology (see “Electronic guidelines”) or be professionally drawn and photographed; freehand or typewritten lettering is unacceptable. Lines must be thicker than “hairline” (at least 0.03” wide) to reproduce clearly. Symbols, arrows, or letters on photomicrographs should contrast well with the background. Submit 3 complete sets of figures. Each figure should have a label pasted on the back indicating its number and top side, along with the authors’ names. Type titles and explanations as figure legends after the References. If a figure has previously been published, acknowledge the source in the legend and submit written permission for reproduction from the copyright holder.
Authors are encouraged to refer to published issues of CJVR on the CVMA Web site (www.canadianveterinarians.net) for questions of format.
Guidelines for the submission of electronic files for accepted manuscripts
Manuscripts
Save the manuscript in WordPerfect 6.0 (or higher) or Microsoft Word 6.0 (or higher) on a CD or an IBM-formatted diskette (not a diskette formatted for Macintosh computers). Include tables at the end of the manuscript in the same electronic file or as separate files.
Figures
Include figures as separate electronic files on the same CD or diskette; use a separate diskette if necessary. It is not necessary to provide an electronic copy of a photograph (e.g., of an electrophoresis gel or of gross postmortem findings); however, if they exist, they may prove helpful. If scanned, figures must have a resolution of at least 500 dots per inch and be saved as *.tif files. Lines must be thicker than “hairline” (at least 0.03” wide). Figures should not be downloaded from the Internet, as they do not have sufficient resolution. Charts, graphs, and line drawings often require minor style changes and therefore should be in an editable format, such as *.eps. A figure created with CorelDraw software must be exported to Adobe Illustrator and saved as an Illustrator file (*.eps).
