Animal Welfare > Animal Abuse > Collecting and Documenting Evidence

Veterinarians may assist humane authorities in a number of ways including collecting evidence and documenting cases of animal abuse or neglect. A veterinarian should begin collecting evidence as soon as s/he is suspicious of animal abuse. Collecting evidence should occur on an ongoing basis throughout the care of the patient(s). Continue to work closely with the investigators. When documenting abuse cases, veterinarians should take precautions to ensure the chain of custody of evidence and to keep meticulous medical records.
