The mandate of the National Issues Committee is to support the CVMA in performing a proactive leadership role on national issues affecting the veterinary profession by:
Analysing the current socio-economic and political environment in order to anticipate and identify national issues that can impact on the different segments of the veterinary profession in Canada.
Establishing an order of priority of key national issues, based on the importance to the profession, the urgency to act and the ability of the CVMA to have an impact.
Developing and recommending to CVMA Council position and policy statements on issues requiring a pronouncement from the CVMA for dissemination either within the profession, or to government officials, the media or the general public.
Monitoring federal government plans for new legislation or regulation that may affect the veterinary profession and recommending CVMA action.
Keeping abreast of the views of Canadian veterinarians and the leaders of the profession as well as those of government and industry on issues that affect or are likely to affect the profession.
Developing strategies for CVMA’s government relations and lobbying.
Identifying resource persons, within and outside the veterinary profession, who can advise the Committee and the CVMA on specific issues as required.
Identifying and recommending to the CVMA President CVMA spokespersons on given issues.
