CVMA Council is mandated to establish the general policies and overall priorities of the association.
At the 1992 Annual General Meeting, CVMA by-laws were formally modified to allow Council to focus exclusively on policy matters, freeing it of the responsibility to oversee the management of the association, which many felt was taking too much of Council's time. The responsibility to oversee the management of the association was delegated to Executive. Council does, however, approve the final CVMA annual budget and reviews the reports on CVMA finances at its regular meetings.
Council may establish different committees, boards, working groups and task forces which will be given specific mandates and which will make policy recommendations to Council. Council members may be asked to serve on CVMA committees as Council liaison. Council may appoint representatives to various boards and committees of other organizations as appropriate.
